THE STORY
BEHIND
THE FROCK
FASHIONS have never been greater fun than they are this spring.
In the evening we are all going in for fancy dress, and, what is more, we are getting used to it; in the daytime we swing along in little-girl frocks, so gay and youthful, with their wide skirts and closely- fitting little bodices.
Funny part of it-most of our little-girl frocks are a type of fancy dress, too.
Don't misunderstand me, by fancy dress I don't mean anything extraordinary or only fit for costume dances. For the true interpretation of the term "fancy dress" is really a style which has made history in the past but which has now gone out of fashion.
But this season many period styles are highlights of fashion again.
MOST popular daytime
fashions of the moment, as you know, are modifica- tions of the various pic- turesque peasant styles worn in parts of Normandy, Brittany, Italy and in Cen- tral Europe generally.
And I can't help thinking that all the little peasant girls who still keep to their traditional costume must be very proud to think that smart women are copying

Omlis Shanghai,
LOOK, for instance, at the
charming peasant frock shown in the sketch and compare it with the original peasant style shown in the background. Haven't they many points in common?
And hasn't the modern designer given a touch of modern sophistication to his interpretation of a simple peasant gown?
The dress is in a beautifully soft angora fabric.
You can see the story behind these two frocks in their actual background. The one on the left is one of the fashionable peasant styles, with a two-colour contrast on the bodice. The one on the right is of monkish inspiration. Both are typically 1939.-- (Selfridge.)
