Rapid Gains

If, on the other hand, the gains are Insuficient, aho will go into the matter carefully, perhaps suggesting changes in the mother's diet or more rest for

ber, or else she may feel that supple- imentary feeds are indicated:"and will ndvis accordingly.

I always advlaą every mother to keep A careful record of her baby's weight, whether she is able to attend a weigh-

ng centre or ROL.

Actually the weighing centre in best because of the facilities for undressing Baby, which could not be managed in the open chemist's shop; but, whatever method yo follow, do have Baby weighed once a week up to the age of six months and after that once a fori- night up to the age of one year.

During the second year, once a months should be sufficient for the nor- mally healthy toddler.

aby

An important point is to have weighed at about the same hour as well as on the same day each week. Well between two feeds is the best time if you want to get a fair estimate of the progress made

If you cannot undress Baby, take a 11e parcel with you containing exactly similar garments to those which the Infant is wearing, and, having had this packet weighed, deduct that little weight from that of the clothed baby,

What to Expect

There must be nothing sinck about these weekly weighings: they must be carried out carefully and exactly, other wise they are useless as a guide to baby's progress.

How much should Baby gain? This is question which puzzles many young mothers, and I and that most of them tend to expert too much where the weekly gins are concerned,

New Set of PICTORIALS

INTIL the 1st April; 1937,

Burma, an eastern land with an area five times that of England, but with less than half Its population, was a province of the Indian Empire.

On that day it was soparated from India and of some import=' ance to philatelists--was given its own issue of stamps.

The first set consisted only of the current Indian stamps overprinted with the word BURMA." Thera was a grost demand for them from collectors, who thought at the time that they would not remain in use very long as a "definitivo" set was tumjured.

It was eighteen months, however, before the now series appeared.

This King George VI set includes many interesting pictorials. Like the athids of the neighbouring country. they are typically oriental in design.

The low values (Irum 3 pics to 2

Native Carvings

In all these vaines the border' de- signa consist of strange mythical and nymbollest ereatures such as na found amongst the carvings of the native buildings.

At the base of the 1 and 2 rupees is

out quite well, is to expect that the child should double its birthweight by the time that it is six months old, nnú that it should have trebled the birth- weight by its first birthday.

This would only apply to the averago baby, of course. Tiny premature babies weighing perhaps five pounds or less alten do wonders in making up for their molest start in life.

Others, again, who started to as nine or ten pounders, may not develop so rapidly where weight is concerned during their first year.

First Months

You can be satlofted if your baby gains four to six ounces every week during the first six months of his fc. After that he may only gain two or tiros ounces each week, especially if he is teething.

During his second year you can rest contented if he gain about 6 ounces each month.

Larger gains during the first six months, coupled with restlessness, wind and signs of pain point to over-feeding; smaller gains or a standstill" go tu show that the diet needs adjustment and probably supplementing,

I als advise you to kech a "log- book" of Baby's progress, for you will And it an immensely interesting record, besides which it may prove a really helpful guide should the child's health cause anxiety at any time.

You can rule the book out for your self, dividing it up into various sections under the hendings of Weight, Height, Mental Progress, Attainments (Firat Smile. First Step. First Word, ele.) and Teething and, if you have artistic

tendencies, you will be able to ornament the margins attractively. May I remind you that this should not only be done in the case of the first baby but also for the second and the third, if your home is blessed with several children. A comparison of all these records is. sure, to be of great family interest in later years.

Recently an excellent little book ins come into my hands called, "How to Keep Baby Well and. among other most useful advice, it shows clearly how these records should be kept for easy reference. The book also deals with euch important matters as feed. ing, weaning." teething troubles, and mild nursery aliments, na well so with the general caro of Baby,

The "Professional Touch" In Ironing

DEFORE 'your Ironing' is actually

Before ironing pure wilk, first dump it down well and leave the garment rolled up, prior to Ironing with a hot iron. The method is. different with Slinntung silk, which must be ironed well as soon as it is dry,

Artificial silk requires careful handling, and should be pressed with a warm (never hqt)' fren on the wrong skin; a hot fron is fatal to artificial silku, spolling the colour and sometimes taking a whole plece out of the material.

Stockinet which has shrunk In the wash can be stretched back to nor mal shape with the iron; first domp ft slightly, then iron it on the wrong side. The damping process is very Important, because if the article is not damp enough the "wringing creases" simply won't come cuil·

Finely woven wellies need only a warm fron when dry, on the wrong. alde, but bund-knitted cordigons and jumpers need a damp cloth when Ironing, with a warm iron.

A belter method, but one which takes more Ume, is Arsi to pin the garment in place on your ironing board, then carefully press it, cxcept at waist, wrists, and lower edge, with a warm iron; this treatment is excellent for a garment which has

Linen and cotton "fancy" work should be damped well, and needs a hot fron to produce a "professional" Klossy surface.

A time saving method with hand- kerchiefs and small lineas is to place them between ironing sheets and a layer of paper, before doing large work, then when you have finished Ironing, raise up the Iraning sheet i and you will find your sinalt work neatly pressed.
