China's "Refugee” Colleges
Fleet Street, London. One of the mirades of the war in China has been the way in which the Chinese schools and universities, driven out of their old homes, have transplanted themselves thousands of miles and kept alight the limp of Chinese learning which has burnt undimmed for at least thirty.con- turies.
One realised it again recently when Ilstening to Dr. TZ; Koo, che of the secretaries of the World Stu- dent Christian Movement, as he des- cribed what has happened. Of the 100 institutions of higher education' in China, more than half were on the eastern seaboard when the war started in 1937, and within ab months a third of them had been wholly or partly destroyed, while others were occupied by the Japanese. Yet 83 of them are now in good running order, though far from their original altes. Some 20' refugee universities have been started and have taken in about 10,000 students exlied from Eastern Chinese Chinn. The
Government has not waited till the end of the war to resume the work of training its people in the arts of modern life. Dr. Koo said. "We have not worshipped the god of war for miany centuries but we have sat with patience and hunger at the feet of our scholars,"
