Lived In The Dark 司公空航亞歐
COMBE HAY (near Bath, Somerset),
AFTER living in terror of daylight for eighty years, Mr.
George Edward Smart, Lord of the Manor of Combe Hay, was carried by villagers to Combe Hay church just after dusk recently to lie in his' con before the altar in the darkness he loved.
When he was nine yours ok, bi eyes were injured while he was at] play with a school triand. Ever siner then daylight, or anything white, caused agony to his eyta.
Life was unbearable unless he turned day into night, night into day.! He died at the age of eighty-nine.
Que of the staff of the Manor House of Combe Hay told me to night-
"Mr. Smart slept all day with his room closely shuttered against the duylight. As soon as it was dark he would get up. He generally Ustened to the radio until midnight.
"Then he would have his lunch and go out for a drive in his car be-

In the beautiful gardens of Combe Hay Manor, where there is a lake. Me Smart bullt an Italian garden and a grotto of shells which were sent from all over the world.
The lake, the grotto and the gar- den he saw only by moonlight. One of his greatest interests was appleul- ture, but he could visit agricultural shows only at night, long after they had closed for the day.
He used to go round the cuttle tents and ather exhibits with a

Giving the court's decision, Judge Maillefal declared: "This 1, which has no claim to literary, artistic or historic merits, contains blunders and improbable er ingenious incidents calculated to evoke mirth rather thun imagination.
"It contains no massage likely to sully the memory of Eugenie de Montijo and Ferdinand de Lesseps in the mind of the audience. There is, therefore, no reason for preventing the exhibition of the film.
