ROSE ELECT OR NAVYLIGHT FOR HONGKONG DERBY?
BOTH IMPRESSED

LAST SATURDAY
Many Important Events On The Card To-day
Mr.
Mr. Eu Tong-son's Rose Elect ... or.... Ciro's Navylight to win the Hongkong Derby to-day?
This is a problem which has been confront- It was expected ing race-goors for some weeks. that Saturday's racing, the first opportunity pun- ters had of seeing the ponies in a genuine race, would throw some light on the problem. But did it? One wonders.
The only things established by that Rose Saturday's events were Elect has plenty of speed-a fact which everyone who has seen the morning galtops in aware-and that scems to like a longhitch has never been really confirmed.
But
the point now seems to be this: Will Rose Elect, which created new record for six furlongs in the Makden Stakes on Saturday (bent ing King's Warden's best of 1.24.3), be able to keep it up in the longer Derby distance? If she can, she will probably win despite the fact that Navylight,
winning the Trial Plate, had no opposition at all from the rest of the field.
In
GOOD PERFORMANCES Both performances were extremely and there seems little impressive, doubt that the first place in the Blue ltiband is between the two, Lilliber and Blue Express were beltind Rose Elect, and Eve of Harvest and Con- quering Tinie were following Navy- light that order; but in each ense, there was a clear-cut superiority of the winner over the rest of the field.
The track at the moment is very
of an old ailment, but he hopes to find a sullalle juckey for to-day's Mr. I. C. Ph took out big race, Navylight on Saturday, but Mr. Holler expressed the hope that Mr J. Pete-Hunt, a friend of his, would ride it in the Derby race.
VERY DISAPPOINTING The form shown by Hyndford Bridge in the Trial Plate was very disappointing indeed, and it does not seem likely that this candidate will be of any danger to Rose Elect or Navylight. Before this race
however, there were MANY run people who thought Hyndford Bridge; up to the standard of these two, but opinion must have changed quickly after the finish of the Trial ate.

Apart from the Derby, there are many interesting races on the card today, including the Lusitano Cup. Garrison Cup, Victoria Stakes, EX- change Plate, Chater. Cup and the Challenge Cup. Only two are for subcription Chinu pontes.
Desert Chief, who broke a record
Saturday, has been entered in only one race, the Victoria Stakes. Therefore she is afrost certale to
air. C. L. Gregory brought Strathbannock home to an easy win in the second section of the Wong Nel Chong Stakes at Happy Valley on Satur day to pay the highest dividend of the day. 300.50. Picture allows the winner at the post-Photo by Juffer.

As only to be expected, both owners are supremely confident of their candidates' ability to win the Derby.
If there are upsets to-day, they will probably be caused by ponies which were left at the starting gate on Saturday. There were several of thern. The public, therefore, are! still in the dark regarding their con- dition, and if their jockeys can get thern away with the bunch in to- day's races, one or two may cause a surprise.
For instance, Mr. Eric Moller, thinks NavyBght will win, though he acknowledges that Rose Elect is a "very line animal." He In very disappointed that his son, Mr. R. B.
