CAN ART OF MIMICRY

BE TAUGHT? Silver Lion On

Florence Desmond Gives Warning

THE "Lady who wishes to learn impersonations'," and advertised for a teacher in the "Agony Column" of a recent issue of the Times, would be well advised to de- vote her attention to the cultivation of another gift.

That, at least, is the opinion of two of the great mimics: Florence Desmond and Elizabeth Pollock. The former thinks it is a pure gift; the latter that it is "the most heartbreaking job

in the world."

Miss Desmond, pausing as sho smeared blue grease paint shadow beneath her eyes at the Coliseum spun round in her chair.

"Mimicry can put the most ap- palling strain on the voice," she said,

"I take very high notes when I do Gracie Fields or Evelyn taye-1 can go up to A-and then I go down very Al do Leslie Henson low when..

The hoarse quaver of the great comedienne with its faint "Oxford accent flled the dressing-room.

King's Car

On the radiator cap of the King and Queen's new car, being taken to Canada with them, is a silver Hon. There has been a silver lion mus- cot on their cars since 1928.

Why?

The answer lies in an incident when, as Duke and Duchess of York, they were big game hunting near

Nairobi in 1925.

After a blank day in the jungle the Duke and Duchess were reating alone before returning to camp

when,

without warning, a llon sprang to- wards them from the dense under- growth only a few yards away.

A light gun with only two shots

left in it lay on the ground beside

the Duke. Ife Analched it up and -441 brought the animal down with a bul- let through its hend at the first shot.
