MORE GRIFFINS TO TAKE PART

(By "Captain Foster")

To-morrow at 11 am. sharp the Hongkong Jockey Club will ring the first saddling bell announcing the open- ing of their 1939 racing season. The Annual Carnival will be continued on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, ter- minating next Saturday. The meet has been awaited by the regular followers of the turf with the greatest en- thusiasm, owing to the fact that the number of this sea- son's griffins, both Australian and Chinese, is higher than that of last year and big fields will be expected every day.

ERIC BOON

RETAINS HIS CROWN

Plucky Display By Danahar In Thrilling Bout

London, Feb. 23. At Harringay. Arena to-night, 13,000 boxing enthusiasts SAW Eric Boon retain the British light- weight title by beating Arthur Danabar in one of the most thril ling fights seen in Great Britain.

The referee stopped the bout in the fourteenth round. The #ght was to be over 13 rounds.

Both fought twoth and nail after the eighth round, which was the crux then. of the whole fight. Until Danahur, boxing coolly and calmly in he old tue British upright position, seured innumerable lefts and rights and was leading on points, Then suddenly Boon landed a hard right to the jaw, flooring Danabar for a count of nine.

The challenger hose but a right and a left cored him again for # rount of nine. Although groggy, he just weathered the round.

AMAZING PLUCK

Then the fun began; and when the referee stopped, the Oght, Dannbar had given an amazing example of his indomitable courage. He had been down seven times for counts of nine and one of three, while Boon himself had also been down, though he had partially silpped, for a count in the thirteenth round.

Even when the referee stopped the Bght, Danahar had boxed so Cour- ageously and cleverly, although he wan tottering round the ring und was almost out on his feet, that he was practically level on points with the champion.

After a cautious stort, Danahar was boxing beautifully and had piled up points by winning four of the first seven rounds.

From the eighth round onwards, it was a slugging match. Boon tried Danahar's to take advantage of

trogginess, but the latter fought back splendidly.

Boon's rights, however, were a telling factor and in the twelfth round he floored his opponent thrice for counts of nine, repculing the per- formance in the thirteenth.

After a hard right had bored Danaher, the referee stopped the night.

BOON PLAYED CARDS! Boon sealed 9 st. 8 lbs. Danahar 9 st. 81⁄4 lbs.

The challenger rose at 7.30 a.. and went for a stroll on Brighton Bench. Baon played cards past mid- night and slept until olmost midday.
