Divorce Petitions Have Increased

THERE was 100 per cent, increase in petitions for divorce last year compared with 1937. This was entirely due to Mr. A. P. Herbert's Bill which came into force on January 1, 1938.

This extended grounds for divorce to desertion, and it was on these grounds that the majority of petitions were made.

An unofficial estimate shows that there were over 12,000 petitions for divorce last year. In 1937 there were 6,049, an increase of only 134 over 1936,
