NO PART OF REFEREE'S DUTY TO TELL
Footballers Sometimes Forget About The Laws
By Ivan Sharpe
London.
Should a referee tell? The question arises because the Grims- by Town team lost a goal to Leeds United in their First Division match through not knowing-or forgetting-the law. When the Grimsby goalkeeper (Preedy) was penalised for carrying the ball more than the permitted four stops a free kick was awarded five yards from the centre of the goal. The home team knew a goal could not be scared direct from the free-kick but lost sight of an- other important provision, namely, that a player of the offending side "shall not approach within ten yards of the ball until it is in play unless he be standing on his own goal-line, between the goal- posts."
The fact that they forgot they Why should a referee tell? Sanchez Ill In Saigon
As generally expected, Yvon Petra, the No. 1 ranking player of France, had no dificulty in winning the For East Tennis singles championship held at Saigon. He met Samboedjo in the final and won in straight-sels after a good battle.
Arriving in Hongkong this morning on his way back to Manila, Leonardo Gavia, one of the two Filipino players who took part in the chim- plonships, brought bad news nbout Amado Sanchez, his team-mate.
Sanchez developed chicken-pox in Salgon and had to remain in hospital there while Gavin returns alone.
Originally the two Filipinos had hoped to go from Saigon to Singa- pore before returning to Manila, but Sanchez's illness caused these plans to be abandoned.
Gavia told a Telegraphs reporter this morning that the final of the doubles was not played, Pelra and Robert Mouvet winning on default from Samboedjo and Liem. of Batavia. Llem fell ill just before the match and the tle was awarded to the Europeans.
