COLONY WILL BE

100 YEARS OLD ON JAN. 25, 1941

HONGKONG'S CENTENARY day has been officially fixed at January 25, 1941.

On that day the Colony will be one hundred years old. -

Although the first British landing in Hongkong was made on August 23, 1839-just under a hundred years ago -when Captain Elliot seized the island, the territory was not ceded to Great Britain until after the 1841 war with China.

The date on which the Colony will celebrate its centenary has been fixed by students of local history, who have picked on the following passage from a report | by Captain Edward Belcher:

"Yo landed on the 25th of January, 1841, at fifteen minutes past eight o'clock in the morning and, being the bona fide first possessors, Her Majesty's health was drink. On the 20th, the squadron arrived and the far was hoisted"

The nature and extent of the celebrations of this important date two years lience, have already been under consideration by Government officials and prominent citizens, but no committee bus yet been appointed in this connection.

The matter has been referred to the Home Government and thely
