Baths Do Not Aid Athletes
Dr. Jack Lovelock, famous mile runner and former holder
the world's record for 1,500 metres, belleves there is a "lot of eye-wash" talked about the training of athletes.
He gave this advice to members of the Amateur Athletic Association in a discussion recently. DIET-A frightfully un- important part of training. The
balanced diet overage
of the normal person was ample. Emphasis should be put on milk, butter, fruit and vegetables.
MASSAGE-Very good for the masseter, but not much good for the man in troining. Useful fri the early stages to counteract soreness, mentally sooth- ing In the later stages. He had gone for one sea- son without any massage.
EXERCISE. He con- demned exercise und cold baths or showers before breakfast. Swimming va luable to teach relaxation and develop arm und shoulder muscles.
SPECIAL FOODS.--Men- tal benefit of sugar often considerable, but not al- ways its physical beneft. as the stomach cannot always absorb It. Aver- age man had enough sugar with meals. Extra salt, especially in summer, recommended.

When he was quite young he won a tournament in Germany playing us an amateur.
As a prize he received
a pair of white dannels, The Ger- man equivalent of our LT.A. im- mediately took away his amateur status.
Then the fun began. His friends tried to get him to appeut because they said the country wanted 1ilm for the Davis Cup, but Nusslein stood firm. He remained a professional end as such he got next to no publicity.
If he had regained his amateur status he would have become as well known as all the rest of the top- class amateur.
