to consider the meanings of the word. "Resolution" suggests not only "deter- mination" but "decomposi- tion," the condition one is usually reduced to when try- ing to amend one's ways.

Lightly undertaken New Year resolutions can do more harm than good, for to make them and to break them depresses, or breeds insincerity.

Some spell "resolution" with "y" instead of an "s," and try to amend their lives in one terri- fie effort, which they speedily find they cannot sustain for a day.
