ADMIRAL SIR BARRY DOMVILE and others re- cently formed a deputation to meet the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators to discuss the amenities of the commons.

bath.

With all these drawbacks, there are compensations.

It is rather wonderful to live in the heart of London and to have a colony of wild rabbits living in a bank honeycombed with their bur- rows at the foot of one's garden and to come out on a moonlight night and

them playing in their dozens near to one's back door.

Or to wake on a winter's morning

and see the whole world as far as the eye can see a mass of untrodden white snow an isolated as a York-

shire moor.

TREES UPROOTED

One of the matters of which Sir Barry complains is the conditions in which some of the keepers live, which critteised for planting he has described as "almost primeval."

The Conservators have also been a formal avenue of birch trees alongside a horse-ride near the Windmill. This is an open, natural birch spo: and every-described as completely inappro- priate and quite out of keeping with the wild amenities of the common here.

The keepers say they have no complaints at all, although, as the planting of the trees has been one of them said, "There is always room for improvement where. We are really very comfortable, though,"

Nine keepers live on the commons. Yet all these serviers surround the Three of them are in the old wind- commons, and come comparatively mill and others in cottages scattered about.

The birches were planted two or near the cottageJ.

BULSKUMMEL & APRICOT BOLS

Bolskummet is man's favourite liqueur. Derived from the Dutch Caraway, its magnificent flavour has spread its fame throughout the world. Comparatively dry, it forms the perfect end to any meal.

VERY SEY

But for the ladies--Apricot Bols is delicate rather than robust and is much appre- clated by sensitive palates for its exquisite quality. Cooled beforehand and sipped slowly after cheese -It is porfection itself.

Royal Chat With Wife Of Workless

Miner

:

A quilt, made and designed by j Mrs. Hitchcock, wife of an unemploy ed Durham miner, was praised by the Queen recently,

Of the 2,000 exhibits in the Handi- craft Exhibition held by the National Federation of. Women's Institutes at the New Horticultural Hall, the Queen was most impressed by this exquisite rose-coloured silk bed-spread, beauti- fully quilted, - -

She stopped to chat to Mrs. Hitch- rock who told her that things were "not too good" in Durham now.

"Is your husband working now?" the Queen asked, and whốn told "No" caid, "I'm so sorry, I do hope things will improve for you."

Mrs. Hitchcock's husband has been unemployed for six years, so the Federation have paid her fare to London to altend the Exhibition.

-234-YARDS LONG

"I am lucky in having a big room I can give to my work," said Mrs. Hitchcock. "It has to be set up in a frame the size of the greatest length of the work (the quilt is more than yards long) and there, it has to stay till its finished."

2

Quilting is now more than just a hobby with Mrs. Hitchcock. She has qualified us a teacher of quilting and sometimes has taken classes for the Durham County Council.

Now she means to enjoy her holiday in London. When not on her Holl at the exhibition she plans to visit the shops-everything from the by bazaars and Father Christmas ́nterests her "And then I expect 191 e quite tired enough," she said, "and ready to go to bed in the evening."

Another country woman who is pecially proud of her work is Mrs. Williams, of Bodwenna, Newborough, Inglesey. She cannot be at the ex- ibition, so a fellow member sent her

a telegram to tell her that the Queen had bought her basket of Marran grass, made from the sedge grass that grow. near her coltage.
