Future"
To the Editor,
Hongkong Telegraph,
Sir,-A more concrete form of prophesy of the future of the Orient was made by Raphael in his Astro- logien predictions (see Raphael's Almanac of 1939).
He said that the Sino-Japanese conflict is not thought likely to ter miate until at least half of 1039 and the defeat of Japan appears to be almost inevitable, that Russia will

APPEAL FOR
CHINA AID
London, Dec. 20, "IN CHINA, that great de- solated land," almost everything is wanting-food, clothing and medical requisites.
The Correspondent says that the committee unanimously agreed that a policy of laissez faire, passive resistance or co-operation with the Japanese would bring destruction to British interests as its only result.
.
They advocated retaliatory action. They themselves did not touch on denunciation of the trade agreement, but whatever the Government intended to do they declare must be done quickly.
Should the Japanese establish a puppet federal government, the businessmen felt their difficulties would only increase for, according to their information, the Japanese would use such a government for eliminating foreign interests.
Finally they requested immediate and definite advice as to the British Government's plans.
The Correspondent says that Mr. Arita's statement yester. day Is being carefully considered at Whitehall. On the face of it the statement seems bleak and uncompromising, hu details are awaited from Tokyo.-Reuter.
