Chun, Finds All Quiet

IN THE EERIE GLOOM which precedes dawn, the Japanese garrison at Shum Chun formed two lines outside the Casino at 5 o'clock this morning.

For five minutes they were harangued by their Commanding Officer.

They gave a loud "Banzai" then, at a sharp command, wheeled sharply northwards and disappeared, marching along the railway line.

At six o'clock, Shum Chun was completely deserted. The Rising Sun flags had been hauled down and nothing remained to tell of the Japanese occupation except a litter of rubbish, the pock-mark of bombs and shells" and one or two damaged buildings.
