"TELEGRAPH" STAFF REPORTER

AT THE COST of blistered feet after a six hours' walk that took me over mountains and through deep valleys far into Chinese territory beyond the Hongkong frontier, I have secured two vital interviews that clear up the position regarding the Japanese mopping up' campaign in the South.

Chinese

Leader Discloses

His Plans

The first interview was with Major Tsang Wu, who is in charge of 540 soldiers of the 151st Division of General Mok Hai-tak's scattered army.

These men, with the ex- ception of 250 troops de- fending Shataukok, are the only Chinese troops between the Japanese forces, now at Pokuling and Saikwan, and their objective-the` Mirs Bay coastline.

The second interview was

DURING HIS frontier tour, the most comprehen-1 with a Japanese officer and two Japanese War Correspondents, sive yet undertaken by a who were encountered west of Hongkong newspaper, a Pokuling. Of the three Japan-1 "Telegraph" staff represen-ese, only one, Takubo Suctsura, tative yesterday penetrated of the Tokyo Asahi, could speak into Chinese territory in a search for the war that is in progress between Shum Chun and Shataukok.

This tour permits the "Telegraph" to publish to- day an exclusive interview with the Chinese officer commanding the remnants of the 151st Division of the Kwangtung Army.

The officer, who submitted to being photographed with his meagre staff, disclosed that the 540 men under his command were, with the exception of about 250 soldiers defending Shataukok, the only Chinese

English.

With Suetsura acting us interpreter, the Japanese officer gave me valuable detalls of the Japanese campaign, and sald that mopping up operations were expected to be completed lo-night with the capture of Shataukok.

A third Interview WLN with Lance Corporal E. Smith, of "C" Company, the First Battalion, Middlesex Regiment who, with six privates, exchanged fire with band of sixty Chinese soldiers at No. 3 Military Camp, four miles | from Shataukok.

The entire frontier

area was

closed throughout yesterday by order of the Hongkong military authorities and it was necessary to strike over mountains to reach my objectives.

Striking northwards from about a mile below Shataukok, I finally came upon No. 3 Military Camp, which

The Chinese were encamped д Cheungkut village, in Chinese terri- tory not far from the Lin Mo Han Mines, when they were visited by the "Telegraph" reporter,

When the reporter approached the village the soldiers were lined up in two ranks and were being harangued by a young Chinese

woman.

At

the conclusion of their talk the men gave a spirited cheer.

When the Telegraph" reporter was about a hundred yards from the town, he was suddenly challenged by a Chinese sentry, who could not talk English.

It was at this point that an exchange of fire took place early yesterday morning between the seven British soldiers guarding the post and sixty Chinese soldiers, regulars the 151xt Division, who attempted to enter British terri- tory without surrending their arms.

Japanese Tell Of Shataukok Advance

THE JAPANESE TROOPS operating along the Hongkong front yester- day occupied Pokuling and Saikwan, two important villages north of Taukuling Police Station.

They intend to continue their mopping-up operations as far east as the Mirs Bay area which, they insist, has not yet been entered by any Japanese troops, and expect to reach Shataukok to-day.

This news was conveyed to the "Telegraph" yesterday by a Japanese officer who, with two Japanese War Correspondents, was found by a "Telegraph" re- porter slightly west of Pókuling. The two Japanese War Corres- pondents, one of whom photographed the Telegraph" reporter,

are with the Japanese Army.

Only one could speak English. He Was Takubo Suctsura, War Corres- pondent of the Tokyo Asaht.

The Japanese forces operating near Hongkong come down the Canton- Kowloon Railway from Walchow, via

he revealed. No

entire Japanese forces operating on the Hongkong frontier consist of only 500 men," he claimed.

The unit was fully mechanised, with tanks and armoured cars, he

The Japanese forces will continua their operations right up to Mira Bay
