Eighteenth Century Parental Advice Retailed To Rotarians

A talk on "Chesterfield", the eighteenth-century nobleman whose classical letters to his son are still an influence in parental relations today, was given at the Rotary Club yesterday by Professor R. K. M. Simpson, M.A., Professor of English at the Hongkong University, Dean of the Arts Faculty, and Vice- President of the English Association.

The Hon. Dr. Li Shu-fan presided, and welcomed the following guests:-Rotarions G. King, former President of the Tulpan Hotary Club, T. F. Waters, Wuhu; T. C. Yu, Tientsin;- A. Hoffmeister and II. M. van der Schalk, Canton; G, G. Bradford, Shanghai, Messrs. J. R. G. Whynti, 1. N. Murray, R. A. D. Forest, P. E. Annis, R. Suez, K. Suez, J. W. Waterman and Ng Sz-wing.

Bocial Graces

The dutiful son was expected to apply himself to a range of useful knowledge, far too wide for me to ndiente here. But he was expected a do still more. He was expected to acquire, what the Earl calls "to Gracen." This old-fashioned ideal, obliterated by the mechanism and violence of modern life, was Chester- feld's notion of the final aim education; and the ultimate secret of success in life.

The young Stanhope may be sald to have acquired some tincture of dissimulation. When he died he left, for the Eart to look after, a wife whom he had had the dexterity to conceal, and two sons about whom he had been completely reserved. (Laughter).

It is impossible to read Chester- field's letters without feeling curlous as to whether his own life was led By the graces was meant.attractive in accordance with the advice he gave his son. This is a hard question manners, pleasing qualities, personal to ask of any parent. Chesterfield
