#LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Softball Umpiring
To the Editor.
Hongkong Telegraph.
Sir, I am a very keen softball fan, and have followed almost every Kame played this season, whether the men's league or the friendlies nmong the girls. It is evident that most of the girls have not a complete understanding of the rules and the fine points of the game-this is their first season, and one cannot chalks up against them. But I don't co how they
learn, or the are going to gome made more attractive to both

spectators alike, if in-
dividuals who know less of the rules
of the game than the girls themselves are asked to officiate, At one of yesterday's friendlies it was clear that the umpire's knowledge (7) of Two the rules was rudimentary. stanzas of his decisions were all 1 could stomach, and I left, feeling sick and disgusted.
Give the girls a break! Their them to better keenness entities
umpiring.
Another thing.
Razzing is good, and the girls can take it. But leave out personalities-reference to cor- pulency or to spindle shanka lo in bad taste, and can only brand the wise (?) cracker as being a boor. ALIBI IKE.

Amsterdam, Nov. 21.
The 10th. round of the Avro chess tournament was played yesterday, Euwe appeared once to have an ad- vantage over the champlon, Alekhine,

The game between Keres und Flohr also ended in a draw after 30 moves and that between Reshevsky and
Botwinnik after 40 moves, with Reshevaky having clearly the Deser position and good prospects for a win. Capablanca and Fine also adjourned their game after 43 moves with equni prospects.
