Leopold Godowsky, the planist and composer, was born at Vilna, Russia, In February 1870, the son of Dr. M. Godowsky, A child prodigy, he made his debut on the concert platform at he age of 9. He received his musical raining at the Berlin Hochschule and in Paris under Salat-Saens.

After touring Russia, Poland and Germany he visited the United States, Paris and London. In later years he played all over Europe and in Cana- in, Mexico, Cuba, Japan, China, Java, he Philippines, Hawaii and South America.

Meanwhile he was director of the siune section of the Broad Street Conservatoire, Philadelphia, from 1804 to 1895 and held similar posts uccessively at Chiengo, Berlin and

Vienna.

While playing in Paris in 1927 he cut open one of his fingers on a bluck key and the wound festered. The healing was not quilo completa when he injured the finger again while broadcasting from London. Nevertheless he played Chopin sup- erbly the same evening as guest of the Music Club.

Efforts are being made, it is pointed out, to provide as fully as possible for the war relief measures. It is understood that the total amount of the Government estimates, including those for the Service Ministries, will run into enormous figures.
