GREEN LEAVES

Homemaker's

Diary

by JANET JAY

TO-DAY let's plan a transforma-

tion scene for the bedroom. I do not mean a spring clean nor yet to scrap existing furnishing.

But you can work wonders in chooting up curtains and covers with remnants and short lengths of chints, cretonne and cottons from the sales.

Small "flowery" patterns and All-over leaf designs are most prac. tical for renovations because, being composed of soft mixed colours on neutral grounds, they tane in wall with existing fabrics.

Adding

floral border to plain material one quite good way of cheering up curtains which have shrunk a tile in the washi.

Una a small patterned cretonne or aliny chintz, and make the border seven to nine inches deep, shortening the curtain a little more if necessary, but personally I like to keep the extra material

backing for the border.

The double material at the hem gives extra weight and helps the eur- taina to hang well

Two Fabrics

Avold a straight line of stitching One where the two materials join, effective method of joining is to cut round the slipes of the flowers and leaves on the patterned material. Lack this cut edge on to the curtain and buttonhole the two fabrics together.

Then turn up the hem and slip- atlich the plain curtain fabric to the patterned one on the wrong side.

Another idea for using up a shart length of chintz is to make a draped You pelmet for a bedroom window. will need a length about twice the width of the window.

Hem the ends and finish them with braid or narrow fringe, then drape the

of the window frame, and let the ends hang gracefully at each side,

The new Edwardian trend of fashion is reflected in the high neck frill, elbow length puff sleeves and tiny triangular pockets of this blouse jumper. It's quite simple to make as it's knitted almost entirely in stocking stitch.

ata, to one inch, 10 rows to one inch.

And it a good plan, when facing an old material with a new one, ta shrink the new one before making up by putting it through a warm sonpy inther, then rinsing and ironing 14 while it is still on the damp side.

This saves any trouble due to the Hning shrinking when the curtains are wasted again later. but just for safety's sake slip-stitch the bottom liem temporarily so that adjustments can be made it necessary

You will find short lengths of material extremely useful for re-cover- ing bedroom chairs and ottomans. Well-covered flower and Jen! patterns nre good for these, as they "wear clean" dad cut out economically

If you have one of those comfortable. Abre tub chairs with a sprung cushion, make the cushion a cover of glar cliintz piping the boxed border with a colour in a sharp contrast. The newest idea for giving a neat finish to cushion covers la to fasten them with a zipp.

I mention these covers not only for

cushions which are looking a little anbby, but as an idea for protecting good upholstery from the wear and tear of a workaday world, too.

Then what about new loose covers? One London store is making loose covers free during the run of the sale, so that if you feel afraid to tackle the making yourself, the covern will only cast the price of the materin..

But if you like sewing, it would be n good idea to try your hand at a cover for the bedroom énay cinir

Quiting is a very pretty finish for other cushion covers made from rem- nants: it is simple to work, and R gives the cover a certain amount of sub- atance.

The whole of the design can be quilted in this way, or you could just quilt the more important parts of the pattern, leaving the sext plain.

If you want to make the covera quickly. quilt in diagonal lines ul- kittening so that the quilting forma an all-over diamond pattern, the lines

of stitching boing spaced one or one and a half inches apart.

You will find that quilted covers look well with a simple piped border, or you could edge thóm "with pleated chintæ frill,

Bathroom Curtains

HAITOW

There are all sorts of ways of using up smaller colton remnants in the bed- room: for covering coathangers, mak- ing shoulder pieces for hangers to pro- tect delicato dresses, making wrappers for shoes and so on,

They all look very smart when bord- ered with contrast cotton blas binding to match your colour achenie. Don't forget that with flowered cushions you could make matching covers for the head and foot ends of an iron bed- stead.

Floral cottons are particularly root for bathroom cyrining as they do not get saturated with steam in the same way as thicker material and they are very caally washed and ironed.

One cotton with a glazed surface inoked most attractive made up into casement curtains, all edges instead of being hemmed being bound with a con- trast colour and the window finished with a plain Lancaster cloth pelmet to match the binding.
