GREEN LEAVES

Homemaker's

Diary

by JANET JAY

TO-DAY let's plan a transforma-

tion scene for the bedroom. I do not mean a spring clean nor yet to scrap existing furnishing.

But you can work wonders in cheering up curtains and covers with remnants and short lengths of chints, cretonne and cottons from the sales.

Small," nowozy" patterns and all-over leaf designs ntu moat prac- tiral for renovations because, being composed of soft mixed colours on neutral grounds, they tone in well with existing fabrics,

Adding floral border to plain ninteria one quite good way of cheering up curtains which have shrunk a little in the wash.

Uso a small patterned crolonne or shiny chintz, and make the border seven to nina inches deep, shortening the curtain a little more if necessary, but personally I like to keep the extra materialna backing for tie

border.

A

The double material at the hem gives extra weight and helps the cur tains to hang well.

Two Fabrics

Avold a straight line of stitching One where the two materials join. effective method of joining is, to cut round the shapes of the flowers and leaves on the patterned material, tack this cut edge on to the curtain and buttonhole the two fabrles together.

Then turn up the hem and slip- alitch the plain curtain fabric to the patterned one an the wrong side.

Another idea for using up a short length of chintz is to make a droped pelmet for a bedroom window.

You

will need a length about twice the width of the window.

Hem the ends and finish them with

of the window frame, and let the ends hang gracefully at each site.

Curtains which have seen a good deal of wear this year might be faced with some plain caserdent cloth, choos ing cream or natural or a colour to mäten the leading colour of the room.

The new Edwardian trend of fashion is reflected in the high neck frill, elbow length puff sleeves and tiny triangular pockets of this blouse jumper. It's quite simple to make as it's knitted almost entirely in stocking stitch.

I and it a good plan, when facing an old material with a new one. to shrink the new one before making i up by putting it through a warm soapy Jather, then rinsing and ironing I white it is still on the damp side.

This naves any trouble due to th ning shrinking when the curtains age washed again later. but just für safety's sake slip-stich the bottom - hem temporarily so that adjustments can be made if necessary

Bathroom Curtains

There are all sorts of ways of using up emailer cotton remnants in the bed room: for covering coathangers, inak. ing shoulder pieces for hangers to pro- tect delicate dresses, making wrappers for shoes nnd so on.

They all look very smart whet bord. ered with contrast cotton bins binding Don't to match your colour scheme. forget that with flowered cuallons you could make matching covers for the head and foot ends of an iron bed etcad.

Floral cottons are particularly good for bathroom curtains as they do not get saturated with steam in the same way as a thicker material and they are very easily washed and ironed.

One cotton with glazed surface looked most attractive ninde up into casement curtains, all edges instead of being hemmed being bound with a con- trast colour and the window finished with a plain Lancaster cloth pelmet to match the binding.

Be sure to match the leading colour in the curtains to the general scheme of the bathroom
