Dr. Brown attacked the use of alcohol from the point of view of a medient mun, and sold, that it had been shown by experiment that alcohol deteriorated the nerve- centres. The first effect of alcohol was to paralyse the highest nerve centres. Alcohol was one of the predisposing causes of consumption; it affecled a man's judgment, des- troyed his moral sense, and wealtened his willpower and sense of honour. It was one of the causes of insanity and of melancholia,

It had been said that alcohol was

a blessing in disguise because it) carried off those who were least fitted to survive, but it affected men of the kechest 'sensibilities und sometimes the cleverest and the best,

Dr. Brown went on to discuss the effect of alcohol when taken in small quantities, and denied the popular theory that alcohol effectively warm- ed the body.

WRECKED ON LONE ISLE

Two hundred healthy descendants of the Bounty mutineers, living on lonely Pitcairn Island, have badly shaken the theory that inter-marriage in a community breeds degeneracy.

Mr. J. S. Neill, who, with a medical colleague, Dr. Duncan Cook, apent thirty-nine days on the island last year, says in a roport lasued recently that the theory has no sound basis if tho original stock is sound.

He says the physique of the islanders is magnißcent, their physical courage and strength remarkable. The island is well 'kept-ovidence of "solld work."

For eighty years the island's medical history records an aver- age of only one death a year.

Darker side of the picture is that the discipline of the family has degenerated. Children seem to do ng they like. The art of cooking has sunk to a low standard,

To save the people's culture, says Mr. Neill, better education must be provided for the children.
