TRIED FOR TROPHY THREE YEARS
FOUR YEARS ago Mr. George C. Lau of Kowloon, Tong Įdecided to make photography a serious hobby. Up to that time, he, like thousands of others, had been content to take a few snaps when the spirit moved him, but [one day he discovered that there was a lot more fun and interest to be obtained from photography than by using his camera more or less haphazardly merely to make a pictorial record of a bathing picnic, or a hike over the kills, or a day at the races.
The word Photography took on a new meaning for Mr. Lau, and to- day. his patience, skilt and artistry has been fittingly rewarded.
Recogulsed as one of the leading amateur photographers of Hongkong. Mr. Lau lies been awarded the highest honour in the Telegraph Amateur Photographic Competition for 1930- The Ilford Trophy for the best picture in the competition.
His whining photograph is a mujint- ficent work, without blemish, and culminales tour years of serious study of the art of photography.
But it does not represent Mr. Lau's Best success in the Telegraph's annual competition. In 1934 he won first prize in section two, and this spurred him on to greater efforts. The ex- perience also taught him 34:11ነ †* valuable lessons, which he quickly turned to advantage.
WON SECTION THREE
The following year he carried off ne of the Hord trophies, and, in 1936 continued the good work by winning Section Three of the com- petition. This
crowned year he hay previous achievements, and has turn- ed out the Far Eastern picture of the year.

Thirty years of age, Mr. Lau was educated in America.
When congratulated yesterday upon his latest success, Mr. Lau readily acknowledged that the experience gained through taking part in the Telegraph annual competition had made possible his progress.
"It has taught me many valuable lessons" he said, “which I have been able
to turn to useful account." Mr. Lou used a quarter-plate Graflex camera for his winning study. which is entitled "The Awakening," and which, together with other prize-
