"MY
Absolutely frantic
-
[Y holidays are ruined by midge bites: my ankles swell, and I can't lie in the shade for a second without being pursued by they swarms of insects drive me absolutely frantic."
This cry
from the heart so touched us and awakened such sympathetic memories that at the next meeting of the Beauty Board we had a long discussion on the subject.
ก
IT would appear that midges and insects, though they are fairly indiscriminate, have slight bias in favour of hot and sticky people. The cool and calm person does not get the same persistent attention from the insect hories as the warm and flustered one.
In the same way, lean people in good condition do not as a rule react
to insect so badly
bites an over-fleshed and under- exercised people who tend to be a little out of condition.
"An apple a day keeps the midges at bay" might be an apt quotation.
THESE ure not scientific facts, so far as I know, but merely observations.
So rule number one in the fight against midge bites is to keep yourself cool, calm and in good condition. Put yourself on a light summer diet of fruit and vegetables if you are over- weight; take plenty of tepid baths and follow the usual pre-. cautions against excessive per- spiration.

The daughter is delighted, be- cause it is quite true that in- sects hate the smell of string that has been soaked in creo- sote.
The wife, poor wretch, declin- ing to bedizen herself like some heathen native, was driven to the expedient of tying a piece of string secretly round her neck under her blouse.
This is a good idea also for hikers who want to look neat around the ankles. The piece of creosoted string can be worn under the walking socks.

SNAKE CHARMER
by STEPHEN
SOUTHWOLD
N India to this day they tell the quaint story of Sagrinah. the snake-charmer.
In all India none had such fame as Bagrimah. His boast was that about the world there crawled no snake that he could not charm.
And so his fame spread throughout Endin, and wonderful were the stories told of his magical skill, He grew rich, He and bull himself a big house. grew fat, and covered his plump body with aliks and antins.

Now the Rajah of the country de cided to hold a great sunke-charming contest, and offered as n prize a bag of gold as large as the winner could carry away on his buck.

And although All was so unsuccess- tul n charmer, and was quite unknown to fame, he also decided to enter.
Why not, my son?" said All co "Who knows but what I may Qunga. be lucky and carry off the bag of gold. Alter all, I'm nearly as good as Bagrimah."

But when Sagrimah heard that All was entering for the contest, he called round to his Kittle house and asked him if it were true.
"Certainly, it's true," said Ali. "Hol hot bat hai tee-tent" roared Bagrimab. But you're not?"
"Not what, you hyena?" suapped All, who was getting cross.
**Why, entering for the contest,” re- plied Bagrimah. -
"I am, for sure." sald. All, "and I'm winning it, too, am I not, Gunga?"

But on the day of the contest, when All and Gunga entered the gardens of the Rajah's palace, and saw the forty- six charmers from all over indla gathered there, All felt nervous
And as soon as the contest began AR quickly saw that the bag of gold would not be his. He had never seen such wonderful charming. One after another the charmers squatted down, and with Hair pipes charmed their snakes to amazing performances.
Bagrimah, as the most famous of them all, was left to the last, while All was the one before him. And when Alf's turn came, only one of the snakes would get out of the basket at all, and that one just hissed in his face, and. returning qulekly to the basket, colled round and went to sleep.
And as Ali andly closed the basket and went back to his place, the vast crowd roared with laughter.
Poor All hung his head with aliame, but Qunga clutched his hand and salı, "Never mind, perhaps Sagrimah's snakes will be just an stubborn."
But when Bagrimah, dressed in fus silks and antins and jewelled bro. derles, with difficulty squatted down beside his basket of snakes, Gunga kurw in his heart that the contest was already won; Sagrimiah looked a victor. And then Bagrimah gave such an amazing display of charming that although the crowd disliked his pride And pomposity, they rose to their feet and cheered. Even the tajah tapped his thumb-nails together.
And when Bagrimab had finished. and the chooring had died away, the Rajah gave to Bagrimah a great bag of gold, so heavy that the conqueror could scarcely lift it from the ground. And then Bagrimah made à Hitla

All chuckled. The crowd screamed with Inchier. The Rajal mlled.
But Sagrimah roared, "Take it away brat It's a worm."
"A woman's a snake," giggled Gunga. "Go on, roly-poly, charm it, or else give me the goki."
"Charm it, Eagrimah," said the Rajah pleasantly; "in a shake, a very little one, but you said little or dig.“
"It's a worm, most noble Rajalt," stammered Sagrimah.

And so Sagrlinah squatted down upon the ground, frowning hideously. but not daring to contradict the Rajah. Gunga placed the wooden box with the worm inside in front of the angry charmer, and then sat down beside it
Then Bagrinish began to play upon his pipe. He played as craftily and as cunningly as ho knew, but for all the notice to worm took, Bagriman might as well have been blowing bubble.
On and on Bagrimah played, and snug in its box atayed the worm.

And as they slowly plodded home, Joyfully, Gunga said happily, "I knew you'd get the gold, father,"
"And the first thing we'll do with it, chuckled All breathlessly, "is to build a house twice as large as Sugri- mah's."
And when the house was built, Bagrimah was so consumed with fury and envy that he ran away to the jungle and was never seen again.
