sage sent from Madrid told the world of a military revolt in Spanish Moroccn.”

From that day war has raged in Spain, more than half a million men, women and children have been killed and at least the same number wounded. Damage to property is so high that it cannot be estimated,

Two million Spaniards, who two years ago were leading a nor mal civilian life, are now refugees, more than a 100,000 of them in foreign countries.

General Franco, rebel leader, with Moors (like those on the left). Italians and Germans, now con- trols two-thirds of the Spanish mainland, African possessions, and islands, except Minorca.

Barricades, mostly manned by clyllians, gave assurance that loyalist Spain was prepared to give its life in defence of democracy.

Air raids, with their appalling death roll, horrified the world. Now they are regarded as inevitable as the struggle continues.
