Doctors called by the police to examine motorists charged with drink offences miss their fees if a motorist is not convicted.
That was a complaint made recently at the British Medical Association conference at Plymouth.
Dr. H. P. Lehmann, of Wickham Market, Suffolk, said that he gave two hours in one case. His examination of the motorist satisfied him that the charge was unfounded.
He got no fee, and when he asked why, the police said. "We have no fund to pay you."
Dr. J. W. Bone, of Luton, said that the association were constantly re- celving complaints of that kind,
"LIVELIHOOD THREATENED" Members voted unanimously that a feo of a guinen to one and a half guineas should be paid to a doctor called by the police, irrespective of uny nelion later.
Doctors' livelihood is threatened by the "enormous development" of the hospital service, delegates said. T'eople who could afford speciali
of the trentnient took advantage hospital service.
A resolution, passed unanimoudy, declared that "the practical applica- tion of the Hospital Savings Associa tion scheme has hindered normal development of private practice and of the public medied service."
