HOW SOUTH AFRICANS LOST GAME

Inspiration Saves English Golfers From Defeat

London, Aug. 3.

Britain won a great international at Walton golf challenge match

when Reginald yesterday Heath Whitcombe, the "open" champion, and Henry Cotton, ex-champion, 72-holes four-ball match won the for £1,000 from Babby Locke, the 20-years-old golling prodigy and Sid LWO most Brews

one of the This will go down as slowest, as well as one of the great- est, matches of recent years.

Locke is meticulously careful about every shot he plays. It is slow- motion golt so far as he is concerned. After consultations with the coddle ond practice swings several minutes were occupied with each shot he played, and each round took nearly iour hours.

Cotton frequently snt dangling hist legs in bunkers while waiting for the opposition to put, und Whitcombe firgeted and was obviously a little) disturbed by the slow play.

It was a great up and down struggle but the British pair found themselves in the critical position of one down with seven to play.

COTTON'S INSPIRATION

Then Cotton had an inspiration witch changed the whole trend of the match. For the second me he determined to try the almost im- possible feat of driving across the corner of the dog-legged twelfth and reaching the green.

In the normal The hole, played manner, is 370 yards, but the straight line is probably 320 yards, with a of bushes and ferns vast expa small patch of grass to carry to a before the green.

For the first and only time in the mateli Cotton changed the order of striking, and asked Whitcombe to drive first. He explained afterwards that he wished to see his partner straight down the fairway before he attempted his big drive.

Cotton's ball went straight across the "sea" of trouble, pitched just over the waste of bracken and rolled forward to within ten yards of the

green.

Cotton had accpmpitshed a carry of 280 yards, and had only a simple: run-up to play for his secondi.

Then he laid to within a foot of birdie three the hole and gained n

to square the match. Whitcombe, as It inspired, played at his best, and from that moment the tide turned away from the South Afrleans.
