GREEN SCARF · CASE STORY OF MAN'S HATE

Murder for revenge was alleged at Folkestone Police Court recently when the hearing of the "Green Scarf" case opened.

The allegation was made by Mr. B. H. Waddy when he addressed the Court for the Crown against William Whiting, 38-year-old labourer, of Dover Street, Folke- stone, who is charged with murdering Phyllis May Spiers {on May 23.

"HATED HER

There would be evidence that Whiting believed Mrs. Spiers caused ls separation from Rose Woodridge. The prosecution said that Whiting anted Mrs. Spiers for what she had done, or what he thought she had 228 m.ph.done, in parting him from the woman Five reventeen-ton airboats, capable of dying 3,000 miles he loved.

Ronald Colman Is Engaged

After her death, which, in the viewi of the prosecution, took place in a little clearing in the coppice invisible to anyone up the hill, her body was dragged by her murderer by the feet some 30 feet to the place where it i was found.

TORN SCARF

It was dragged down a steep hill and through a barbed wire obstrate- tion. The prosecution held that the ight was dragged feet first through the obstruction, with the murderer Miss Benita Hume, who recently going backwards on his hands and announced her engagement to

It was comparatively flimsy, and it would appear probable that after her. death her assailant Ged it round her neck, and in pulling it tight ripped | the end off.

The suggestion was that he then at the green seart round her neck and stuffed the tarn scarf into her handbag. Then, after placing the handbag by the body, he was minded to get rid of the torn scarf, and took it out of the handbug again, but left behind the little piece, which he might not have noticed.

'MISSING' PURSE

Another important feature was that missing from the handbug was the girl's little green purse.

It would appear probable that the assailant, in talking out the turn scurt. possibly took out the green purse as well and might have put both in his pocket.

There were three pointersi, con- tinued Mr. Waddy, which indicated Whiting as the man responsible for the girl's death.

The first was tint on the afternoon of May 3 he wukked with her from the town across the golf links.

The next pointer was that over the left shoulder blade of his jacket had been found a right-angled fear. The evidence would be that that tear was exactly the type that would be made on the barb of the wire in the ab- struction if he were going back- wards.

A police officer went through the Rap backwards, and his jackel was turn open by the barb. They would see both jackets and see that the tears were similar and in similar places.

HAIRS

In one of the jacket pockets there were hairs exnetly the same as those from the head of the dead girl.

There was also found in Whiting's possession-"an odd thing for a man to carry a lady's small, green zip- fastened purse like that of the dead girl.

Mr. Waddy said Whiting had told the police that he had never had at green starf, but "a host of witnesses" would say that they had seen Whiting frequently wearing the green starf.

There were witnesses who would that Walling, in unguarded

There could be no doubt that he was still Infatuated with the girl, Rose Woodridge, and his mind was Alled with an obsession of resent- ment against the person who came between them and caused the separa- tion.

After his arrest on June 25 he was and replied: "I £1117 not charged guilty."
