NE of the early Civil Servants of Hongkong, whose appointment initiated a "wholesome era" in the official life of the Colony, was the Hon. William Hastings Alexander. He was for nearly thirty-five years in the employ of the local Government, and held many im- portant posts ranging from that of Clerk in the Supreme Court to Colonial Secretary and Executive Councillor.
