WHAT IS

IS THE JOY OF LIVING WORTH?

Judge On Husbands Made More

Valuable By Death

DOES

a dustman enjoy life more than a millionaire?— a man aged 23 more than a man of 44?

These were questions which Mr. Justice Langton put to himself in the Admiralty Court recently. He is the latest judge to be in search of a formula which will translate "expectation of life" into terms of hard cash.

"Unfortunately, we have no thermometer of happiness," he said before reserving judgment in the cases before him.

Mr. Justice Langton's reflections were prompted by cross- appenis from an award of the Registrar of the Court in the ease of 22 claimants, relatives of nine men drowned when the French steamer Boree turned turtle after collision with the Spanish steamer Aizkarni Mendi, in the North Sea in March, 1936.

Detectives announced that the 10-year-old Trent had confessed stabbing the child to death, but the youth told re- porters he couldn't remember committing the crime.

CASE OF "LITTLE HAZEL" The law on the pot, aliserved Mr. Justier Langton, was extremely perplexchat.

His lordship recalled a reeem Pro in which, he said, Mi Justler Charles disagreed with a jury who hadi awarded £350 to one of two children

jured in a perambulator, and gave £1,000 in respect of a child, retocred to a "little Hazel," who was killed.

Mr. Justice Charles said he thongol the damages were excessive,

Refering to the present ease, his fordship said the Registrar gave the widow of the second engineer £4,000, her baby son £700, and his (the ea gineer's) mother £490. He gave the widow of the cook £1,020, à son of two

"Are we to make it more valuable to retain husband then him?" asked Mr. Justice Longton.

Hr observed that the comments af the Judges uded this problem ter- ribly difficult. Some of it was very AOL tangled thought and he did

the wonder that Lord Roche, in House of Lords, said, "You had bet- ter not tell the Jury toe muet."

Mr. G. 11. Wilinei (tor the French- men) said one of the points of his cross appeal was that the Registrar had put
