TO BE ANNOUNCED FOR THE FORMA- TION OF THE GREAT WOMEN'S ARMY WHICH IS BEING ORGANISED AS PART OF BRITAIN'S WAR EMERGENCY PREPARATIONS.
It is to be in two sections, backed and or-!
One ganised by two Government Departments. section, for service under the War Office, will be in effect a women's Territorial Army, which will take the place of the non-combatant section of the present Territorial Army.
The women Territorials will be trained in peace time just as the present Territorials are trained. In time of war they will provide a trained woman to take the place of every non-combatant man in the Territorial Army, thus releasing him for fighting duty.
This would mean that if another war should break out men would do the fighting and women the work that keeps an army in the field.
THE ORGANISERS
Those called by the War Office to do the preliminary organising are women who all played a prominent part în women's activities during the last war. They are:-
LADY PERROTT and DAME BERYL OLIVER, of the V.A.D.
,
LADY LONDONDERRY, representing the mechanised transport section of the Women's Legion.
LADY HAILSHAM and MISS BAXTER ELLIS, of the Women's Transport Service.
MISS NIVEN GERDS, of the women's section of the British Legion.
DAME HELEN GWYNNE-VAUGHAN, of the Women's Emergency Service.
These women were called to a War Office meeting to arrange the unification of all the bodies for which they are responsible in preparation for a recruiting drive to bring in the other women of the nation.

SOME CONFLICT IS EXPECTED WHEN APPOINT- MENTS TO THE HIGHER COMMAND OF THE NEW ARMY ARE ANNOUNCED. WOMEN WHO DID SUCH WORK IN THE LAST WAR ARE HOPING TO BE GIVEN THE KEY POSITIONS, BUT THIS IS UNLIKELY.
It is intended to give the key appointments to comparatively young women on the same principle as the recent reorganisation of the Regulur Army, commissions of a temporary kind.
Social workers, who are losing heart at the magnitude of the pro- blem they are attempting to solve, point out that the money spent by the democratic Governments in iuri-
prisoning and shipping these

fugees, would be sufficient, if pooled in an international organisation, to settle the victims in one or other of the South American Republics which) will still accept them,

KEY WOMEN
•
A second section of the Women's Army, working of course in close liaison with the War Office section, is being organised by the Home Office. This section will be responsible for Air Raid; Precautions work, and at its head is the Dowager Lady Reading.
WOMEN IN ONE SECTION WILL BE DRAFTED TO ANOTHER IF THE WORK IS CONSIDERED MORE SUITABLE FOR THEM. THE KEYNOTE OF THE WHOLE SCHEME IS TO PUT EVERY WOMAN INTO THE JOB FOR WHICH SHE IS BEST TRAINED OR MOST SUITABLE,
The one hope of these men and women lies in the International con- sident Roosevelt, which opens ference on refugees, inspired by Pre- Evian on July 0.
