SALISBURY.

SHEEP shearing has begun on the

Wiltshire Downs.

The many flocks are being rounded up by shepherd and dog-neighbour helpe neighbour.

As the strength of the sun inercases, sheep feel the weight of their fleeces and are glad to be rid of them. The shearer follows a skilled and ancient craft.

To-day we were among the flock of about 450 cross-bred owes and lamba belonging to young Mr. J. F. H. Thomas, Stoke Farzo, Broadchalke, Wiltshire.

His flock grazes upon a thousand wide acres of upland pastures that can fatten a sheep without the aid of trough or cake tub. Find. ing that their shophard, Bert Gulliver (Mackie, to his confederates) was across at Knowle Farm, Bowerehalke, we went over the valley.

Shepherd Gulliver's dog. Nell, stayed at home with Dinah, the farmer's daughter. We found Mackie and another shicarer, Stanley Emm, about halfway through Mr. Williamson's 500 ewo legs. "We'll be finished they b'to-morrow, somewhen that'l! allow us to make a start on Mr. Thomas' Grst thing a Wednesday.

Sixty Apiece

Mr. Williamson's ewe flock was wiped out by foot-and-mouth disease carly in January. With the compensation money he has bought this grand lot of last season's cwe lambs with which to restart his downland flock. This is their first shcaring, "Sixty apicee" is a good day's scaring. Time must be allowed for the occasional

" wet or the cleaning of clippers, A couple of Mr. Williamach's chaps, Albert King and Wally Frampton, stand by to give a linnd to the shearers.

A start soon after daybreak, it's dusk before the shearing gang gete home, proud men because they know the iob they do is uncommon and skilled.
