JAPANESE PLUNGE INTO DEATH TRAP
FURIOUS
FIGHTING
AT MATANG
Great Obstacles In Way of Japanese Drive on Hankow
Hankow, June 28.
Japanese troops which landed east of Matang are now caught in a death trap, declared the Chinese military spokesman this morning.
com-
While the spokesman admitted that the Japanese have broken through in one section of the Chinese line at Matang, he declared that the Japanese east of Matang are now pletely encircled, either by the waters of Tapeh Lake or
Chinese troops driving east from Matang. Another column of Chinese troops has circled around Tapeh Lake to attack the Japanese from the rear from Hsiangkow.
The Chinese at Fenglungshan are holding on the hill behind the south bank of the Yangtse, although the Japanese warships in the Yangtse are heavily shelling the Chinese positions.
The Chinese and Japonese foreen, See" are now facing each other an the north bank of the Yangise in the Jilla east of Talhu, while at Cheng- yungkwang, the Chinese and Japan- ese are facing each other across the Pi River, which is at present heavily swollen and has brought military operations to a stand-still-Reuter.
Difficulties In Way Of Japan Drive
Hankow, June 28. The Japanese advance on Hankow must overcome many communica- ilons difficulties, declared the Chinese spokesman to-day.
Large scale military operations. In-¦ volving the use of live or more divi-Į siens, are most difficult when they Bre conducted any distance from the rallways.

Occupation of Strategic Island Would Threaten Hongkong Trade Lane
London, June 27.
If Japanese forces land on Hainan Island, the British and French Governments will afford each other full support as the circumstances warrant.
Britain's position regarding rumours of a contem- plated Japanese landing on the Island, which commands the strategic Hainan Straits south of Hongkong, and which lies off the French Indo-China territory, was made clear in the House of Commons to-day by Mr. R. A. Butler, Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Replying to a question in the House of Commons, Mr. Butler said that the British and French Governments had made it clear to Japan that they regarded any occupation of Hainan Island by Japanese forces as calculated to give rise to undesirable complications.
"Should these complications unfortunately arise, the British and French Governments will doubtless afford cach other full support,” Mr. Butler declared.--Reuter.
