Indo-China territory, was made clear in the House of Commons Amy
to-day by Mr. R. A. Butler, Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
Replying to a question in the House of Commons, Mr. Butler said that the British and French Governments had made it clear to Japan that they regarded any occupation of Hainan Island by Japanese forces as calculated to give rise to undesirable compli- cations.
"Should these complications unfortunately arise, the British and French Governments will doubtless afford each other full support," Mr. Butler declared.-Reuter.
Hainan is the largest island owned! by China. It is about 630 miles in circumference and is regarded as part of Kwangtung Province. There are over 200 villages, and the principal city is Hothow. Hainan is report- ed to have been heavily fortified just prior to the outbreak of hostilities with Japan.

Importance To Hankow Army
Shanghai, June 28. Both the Chinese and Japanese commands are rushing all possible rein- forcements to Matang and Hsiangshan, east of Ma tang, where a major battle is now in progress.
Considerable importance Is attached to the outcome of the engagement, as a Japanese Euc- cess would virtually seal the fate of Klukiang, where the large boom is placed across the Yang- tse, and permit the Japanese to drive on Nanchang and Chang- sha, thus cutting the Canton- Hankow Railway.
This would automatically cut off the main line of retreat of the Chin- ete forces at Hankow, and force them to fight decisive battle in the Wahan arca
The Chinese authorities at Hankow have admitted the possibility that the Japanese might strikce towards Nanchang from two directions-from Kiukdang in the north and from Hangehow in the north-east-and afterwards use the Cheklang, Klangst and Klongsi-lunan railways for u. drive on Chungcha.-Reuter.

During the past three or four days large numbers of troops have been concentrated in this area by both Japanese and Chinese, and the main body of the Japanese fleet is now stationed within a few miles of the boom cross the Yongtse at this
