ARMY SCHOOLS ADOPT RHYTHMIC PATTERN SYSTEM.
A
Claimed To Be Means Of Banishing All Bad Handwriting
NEW and revolutionary method of teaching children handwriting has come to Hongkong, and is to-day be- ing employed in the military schools here. Known as the Marion Richardson system, it has many outstanding fea- tures which experts agree combine to make a person write more legibly, and to learn to write very much more quickly than through the ordinary methods employed in the schools.
It is claimed that so effective is the system, that if properly taught, it will forever banish bad and ill-formed handwriting. Based on natural movement, it is said to be the answer to the harassed employer's prayer for decipherable handwriting.
So interesting are some of the re- Aults fram this system. that the Telegraph pubilehes together with this explanation, three photographs inken from the Marion Richardson "Tencher's Book". which clearly illustrate the results of the new methods.

It is claimed that before a child is ready to take on Interest in letters, he should be given the simplest of these patterns and encouraged practise them, and to invent others by combining and playing with the given movements. But so doing the child will tench himself the rhythmic control, the swiftness and #ghtness

The "Teacher's Book" gives number of Illustrations of the pat- terns suggested, and then goes on to describe how, from this foundation, the children should be taught to make capital letters. For example, the V and W are made with one con- tinuous zig-zng movement. The first stroke of the M should be a down-stroke: the rest of the letter is made without lifting the pencil. A is mode with two down strokes and one cross-stroke.
It is also explained that U,C,G,O,; and Q are all mode without lifting the pencil, except for the tall of the Q. which is an added stroke,
The small letters are all made with an unbroken movement of the pencil, and it is suggested that it will help the child to make good letters if he pays attention to the internal shapes rather than to the outline.
By the time the child is 61⁄2 years of age, he should have begun to make use of writing, and he should be given coples to trace, as this will rapidly form and establish his hand writing, because it so simplifies the process that I frees him to give his whole attention to guiding his penell. Afterwards he should be impress- ed with the importance of correct spacing, and be taught a convenient rule that the distance between words is little more than the space of one
