open to correction, hut I don't think Mr. Gregory is right when he speaks of Japan as a great exporter of tea. He probably means Java. Japon does not produce very much more than her own domestic requirements, but vast quantities are grown and manufactured in Java and other parts of the Netherlands Indies, mostly for export.

HISTORY OF TEA
in
Sir. read with much Interest Mr. T. Paul Gregory's excellent ar- ticle on the "Romance of China Tea' in Saturday's issue of your paper.
There are, however. one or two points on which Mr. Gregory is not quite accurate, Although the dis- honest practices of Chinese exporters might have been responsible to some extent. the great decline of the China ten Industry was primarily due to the expansion of the planta- tion Industry in India and Celyon. As Mr. Gregory is no doubt aware, tea is not indigenous to China. The bome of ten is Assam, India. This is how it was taken to China: In the days when Buddhism held sway in used to travel India, nissionaries across the Himalayas into Tibet and the Western and South-Western pro- vinces of China. These long, weary Journeys were done mostly on foot. An nsectic monk named Botchihar- ma, making the journey from Cen- tral India, found himself very thirs- iy and tired in the plains of Assam. So, quite by accident, he pleked some leaves from a nearby bush and began chewing them. Quickly he felt much revived. "Ah! This is an excellent plant," thought Botch- harma, "I must take some of these seeds to China."
The Chinese were very pleased
with Botchiharma, "A man who could give us such a gift must in- ||||||||~||~|| deed be preaching an excellent re- ligion." they agreed. And so Bot- chihuurmo's preaching Nourished quite As well as the tea plant in

Chinn,
It was Chins, however, which gave ten to the world. Whether Botchi- harma ever got back to India and extolled the virtues of the tea plant history does not tell us, but we know that China made the best use of it. Later British settlers in Indiu dis- covered the plant in Assam and be- gan cultivating it. As the industry developed in India so did the imports of China teu in England decline. later years, Chinese ten re- ceived an additional severe blow by the introduction of Empire pre- British colonies and dominions. And ference schemes in practically all the Chinese tea export bu- now siness has dwindled down to min- ute proportions.
Of course, ten drinking in the 20th Century is not what it was in the 18th and 19th centuries. Then, with a.lot of people the whiskey decanter was a regular accompaniment, As Ingoldsby said:
"I see no great sin in it,
To put just one spoon of St. Felix's gin in it!"

RUF-
Sir, With reference to the article in yesterday's Issue of your Journal on the subject of the banning of the March of Time, we are most prised at the statement by the official of the German Consulate to the effect that "the public here has lost nothing in the banning of the film," Inasmuch as this directly contradicts what was said at the Censor Studlo
After
the film was re-censored, a representaHve 'of the German Consulate admitted that it was very good film, but that he considered the commentary anti-German. He naked whether this could be eliminated, adding that it would be unfortunate if the pleture could not be screened locally.
We should like to take this op- portunity of stating that the March of Time was shown in the Alhambra in silent form simply because it was impossible to replace the subject at such short notice. Unless per
permission can be obtained for the film to be exhibited with the commentary, will be withdrawn entirely,
