Conference Calls For Religious Freedom

Bournemouth.

Dictator regimes, Mussolini's war talk, and Nazi per- secution of Christians and Jews were condemned at the National Free Church Council Assembly last month.

Dr. J. D. Jones, the president, moving a resolution (umanimously carried) calling for religious freedom, said: Suppression of religious freedom is making it difficult, if not impossible, to enter into amicable relations with Nazi Ger. many and Fascist Italy.

"I find it difficult to enter into friendly relationship with a man like Mussolini, who broke his pledged word and committed outrages in Abyssinia, and who, by employing Italian troops, is prolonging the agony in Spain.

"While Mussolini and Hitler want a friendly England, it time they knew int we in this country regard with detestation the persecution to which Christian people are being subjected in

Those countries.

"Signor Mussolini in a recent speech falked about millions of men and thousands of aeroplanes ready to win a quick war. but we ought to tell him that that kind of talk does not promate peaceful relations."

OFFICE BOY TO LORD MAYOR

Sir Stephen Killik Dead

Sir Stephen Killik, Lord Mayor of London in 1934-35 -King George the Fifth's Jubilee year-who has died of pneumonia at the age of 77, was once an office boy earning Ss. a week.

"My father, a doctor, died when I was 12," he once said. "He left only debts. We had to leave our home in Chelsea, my mother, my two sisters and myself, and I had to go to work, I got a job as an office boy."

He had a thirst for knowledge and no money to satisfy But by economising in meals he built up a good eollection second-hand books.
