Tokyo, June 7. Amoy Island's pre-war population of 120,000 has been reduced to 18,000, it is revealed here.
Nearly everyone has fled from the Island, some seeking sanctuary on Kulangsu, in the foreign concessions, others fleeing to the mainland,
Japanese naval authorities strenu- ously deny that the population has been reduced in any way other than by evacuation. Nor, slates a Jupan esa naval spokesman, has the city been reduced to ashes, the Japanese landing party occupying the island so rapidly that only a few bulidings were destruyed.
Representatives of the International Red Cross Society who visited Amoy Island on May 23 slate that Chinese prboners were being treated weil ! Trans-Ocean.

It has been learned from official sources which cannot be divulged that Japan plans the establishment of a naval base at Amoy of sufficient strength to counterbalance the British base at Hongkong.
Other sources discount the possibl- lity of a naval base, but admit the possibility of an air base being built on the newly acquired island.

protest specificnily second deals with the bombing on Monday of the Paul Doumer Hospital, which was severely damaged when it was struck by two bombs.
The Petit Partsien states that the French Ambassador in Tokyo has been instructed to call the Japanese Government's attention to the fact that the hospital had the French natima tricolor prominently painted on the roof, and that the latter must have been clearly visible to Japanese airnen.
Le Journal also stresses that it is diffult to believe that the Japanese aviators did not recognise the hospital, since it is situated in its own grounds outside the city.
Le Journal adds that the French Ambassador has been instructed to express to the Japanese Government the dupation fell in Franer at the bombardments of Canton, which have violete not only all international clights but also the elementary prin- emples of humanty --Trans-Ocean..
