DOCTOR'S WIFE AWARDED
3/4D DAMAGES
Libel Action Against
A Well-Known British Firm
FREEDOM FOR 113 UNHAPPY
A doctor's wife, Mrs. Florence Emily Pierce, of Longbridge- COUPLES
road, Barking, Essex, was awarded three-farthings damages by a special jury in the King's Bench Division recently.
She had brought a libel action against the Witney Blanket Co., Ltd., and the Recovery and Adjustment Bureau, Ltd., of Cannon-street, EC-a debt-collecting agency, which, said Mr. Justice Finlay, had adopted "extremely undesirable methods."
The case arose out of the purchase
of a cloth roat from the blanket, cont- 1935 by Mra pany In November Pierre for £2 158. on the instalment system.
Her enau was that after the had settled her account in October 130 she received communications from the bureau describing her an "stubborn defaulter," demanding im- mediate payment and indicating that an "Inspector Matthews" woult b calling upon her.
BOGUS LEGAL PHRASES

sense.
G. O. Slade, for the blanket company, said Mrs. Pierce was not an uneducated type of person who would be affected by letters in way that "Mrs. Aris" of "Mr. Gamp" fame might have been.
Mr. P. B. Morle, for the bureau, said his clients were sincerely sorry that they had sent the commonlen- tions. They were under the impres sion that the debt was still oustand- ing.
Mr. Justice Finlay indicateal that he would later hear legal argument on the question as to whether there had been a publication of the libel.
The jury found that the defendunts were equally responsible for the i libels, They awarded Mrs. Pierce a forthing on each of the three bels.
