MR.
MAMFORTH'S afternoon
at Kembury Park had been. on the whole satisfactory. A keen supporter of the "Tote," he had invested a couple of pounds in all on various runners in the five races. His selections for the two o'clock had flopped, but the 2.30 produced a winner in Flamingo (the Toto on two tickels pald £205. Gd.), the 3.0 yielded an- other in Pelorus Jack (£2 75. d.) and the 3.30 yet a third in the favour- ite, Tea for Two. Tea for Two only brought in 11 shillings, but there was still the four o'clock race to come and Mr. Mamforth had great hopes Madonna. of the bay mare Sistine "A blasted silly naine," he said to his companion, Ada Littlegs, "but what's in a name anyway? "Phew!" said Mamforth as, a few minutes later, he started his two- scater "A near thing that, ch, Ada? Tony Bulliver that was; he's had it in for me for a long time.
We must beat it for town and fix up an alibi, pronto. Tony won't split on that's one thing; he knows darned. well it wouldn't pay. The Fatique of yesterday
still with him
Why do you wake up in the morning tired en when you appear to have had e good night's sleep?.. the answer is simple. You have not gluen Nature the opportunity to replace the energy you expended during the previous day.
Sleep is the period of recuperation-the time set aside for the work of restoring the tired tissues of the body and re-energising the vital forces. For this work Nature demands a supply of the right kind of nourishment, 'Ovaltine' has the double advaninge of being the surest inducer of sleep and the most complete form of nutelment for rebuilding body, brain and nerves while you sleep. It contains the concentrated nourishment extracted from Nature's finest foods-malt extraet, fresh creamy milk, plus new-laid eggs from the world-famous "Övaliino' turms. Remember that Overnight 'Ovaltine' is overnight nourish- ment. But ba qulle sure it is ‘Ovaltine'—there is definitely nothing just as good."

Let me sec. day, working on my ledgers; expect that you called for me at-when, three o'clock and we went for a short run round in the car. I don't believe there's anyone who can give evidener against us. The clerk at the Tole pay-office might, but it's only his word against mine. And, anyway, those fellas have their eyes glued to their money. They never look at one's face."

Ada Littlego was thinking. "That's okay, Joe," she said. "But what nboul incriminating evidence? It the cops do get on to you they're sure to search you, you know. Just go through your pockets. And badn't you better give me your fe-preser- ver?"

"Gosh, Ada," was his comment, "what brain wave of yours thaLwas! These tickets would have suck the bloom- Ing raft."
Meanwhile, Mr. Bulliver had re- covered consciousness and contrary to Momforth's expectation - had named the lutter as his assullant. The consequence was that, soon after Ada's departure, Joshua Playfnir reached Mamforth's office. He was accompanied by Sergeant Dumbell and had a search-warrant In, bls pocket.
MA
MAMFORTH'S carefully worked-oul alibi was re- ceived with polite sceptlelam. But when he responded, with alacrity, to the suggestion that his person should be searched, Playfair felt less sure of his ground. "H'm," was the In- spector's inward comment, "no flies on Joe, evidently." The search com- pleted, he and the Sergeant left; from a neighbouring cull-box Play- fair, in some perplexity, rang up the Yard.
Ada Littlege was visited that 'some night and gave evidence which in ́oll particulars corroborated Mamforth's. She had already disposed of the "in- criminating evidence." None
