Hoar frost crusted the milk. bottles on the doorstep at 8 am. The first blossom of the almond tree glowed pink in a halo of fog. A cat stalking a bird left a spoor of paws on the crisp white carpet of the lawn. It was a cold March morning. Temperature 45

degrees.

By nine, the sun had wrestled through, and was casting long wintry shadows.

50 degrees.

11 A.M. We had meant to make the journey leisurely. Now we had no choice. The Brighton road had become a procession of cara, pompous limousines, panting crocks. The only things missing were the "charas."
