PHOTONEWS

SOLDIERS

TUESDAY, APRIL 12, 1938.

HAPPENINGS AS SEEN BY

THE CAMERA'S EYE

OF TO-MORROW

'HE soldier of the future,

THE

when in action, will look either like a mountaineer or a mechanic.

As shown in these platures, he will have no buttons to polish and wil carry a pack of little more than hal! the weight piled on the backs of the men who want to war between 1914 and 1018.

The reason is the change de- manded by the intensive mechani- saiton of all branches of the modern ..Army..

Two new types of uniform, which are to be tried out by every 'Com- mand, at home and overseas during thecoming training season, - were shown for the first time yesterday.

Iliesc

tho "manacqulus”? · Dr Army's dress reform paraded recent- ly at the Central Becrulling Depot, Great Scotland Yard. 8.W, while re- crulla looked on in bewilderment at the latest "crcations,"

One design makes the soldier look like a "farmer's boy." It consists of a pudding-basin, or "deer-stalker's " bat, loose-fitting sports-type facket and shirt that can be worn with or without a tie.

Sports Outfit

The trousers are of a loose-cut, sporting type and with them are worn six-inch gaiters easily fixed with three cilps.

This is intended to appeal to the 'diminishlag number of foot-sloggers,

An alternative is the two-piece affair, in the style of a mechanio's overalls, with a "zipp". fastener blouse and ski-ing trousers buckled at the ankle.

For the soft hat a "forage cap,"! such as is worn by airmen of the RA.F., is substituted,

Both uniforms are made of a new colton-texture, material known as "denim," which considerably

lighter than the ordinary khaki.

·Six different shades of khaki are being tried in the new uniforms which are intended solely as the "training" and "action" dress of the new "Army,

HEAVY greatcoats and other articles which' the old-tims. soldier carried will in future be taken for him to the scene of sellon by his regimental transport lorries,

In the picture below one of the Raiforms in being inspectód ? by Journalists and War Omce guests.
