Hello, kiddies: You all seem to like cross-word puzzles-it took ages and ages to go through all the entries for last week's competition, and so many them were right, too.

of

When dozens of kiddies, send in correct entries, It's hard to know who to give the prizes to, for then I have to take age and neatness inlo consideration, and, in the case of the Seniors, painting.

I think, when you consider their ages, that the neatest Senior entry

was from

Jean Grady, aged (10)

Paddy Quie. (aged 6) 21, Homantin Street,

WHAT I SAW IN CANTON-

CANTON Was

the first

Chinese city that I visit- ed, and a 'very clear and vivid picture remains in my mind.

For five months it has been a matter of touch and | go whether Canton would become a centre of major fighting.

Living In Junks WHEN I met the Governor- General, Wu Te-chen, he said: "I hope that the Japanese attack Canton, for the more we can spread their front, the better for us strategically | with our immense population.

General Wu has had experi- ence of Sino-Japanese conflicts, for though only 40 he was Mayor of Greater Shanghai during the 1932 trouble.

The Mayor of Canton showed me receipts for money amounting to more than £500 In our eurrency. This money had been sent by the Chinese dance partners from a Singa-

pore night clubl

But however much China may be believed to have united in recent years the Cantonese are as indepen- dent as ever. It was only a small group who marched up to the Shang- hai front in August.

There has always been greater friendliness between Canton and Japan then between Nanking and Japan.

It may be the racial contact, for there is much Cantonese blood in many Japanese, and the expert, until he detects the accent, finds it very dimcult to differentiate between Cantonese and a Formosan.

M

This has resulted in the past few months in a terrible spy scare—and from all evidence a spy scare with reason. Formosons have been get-

Gaiety-Once

INSTEAD of losing their native character the new buildings are of a modern Chinese style. Until the start of hostilities they were gally painted and brightly illuminat- ed at night, for the Cantonese love brightness.

Then came news of warfare in the north, Now the Cantonese have never had much love for the people In the north, for, to begin with, they are another race, speaking, another language.

The women in the north are ugly In comparison with the Cantonese, who are typically portrayed by the Anna May Wong type. The men, with their aquiline noses, are more like the Japanese aristocrats,

The Cantonese see little of for- eigners, though in many ways they are in far closer touch than the Chinese in the north. for Canton is only 100 miles from Hongkong.

WEEK-END PROBLEMS

PROBLEM I

THOMAS AND TIMOTHY

"I do hope," said Mrs. Titmouse, "that Thomas and Timothy will be lucky."

"In what way?" asked I "Why, in being chosen for the School expedition. Sixteen boys. are eligible--including Thomas and Timothy--but there's only accommodation for ten. So they're choosing the lucky ones by draw- ing lots."

Thomas looked up from his homework. "I've been calculat- Ing the chances against bolh of us going And so the chance that neither of us goes. Do see if I've worked them out correctly."

several denile proofs (which my interpreter verified) of documents showing evidence of plots to over- throw the Cantonese Government.

The "Spider"

SI was leaving General Wu's office one day I saw a crowd

in the barracks yard.

"A spider," sold my chauffeur.

I gathered. by "spider" he meant who spy. I glanced at the

man, appeared like any coolje. As I drove out of the yard I heard a shot.

"They usually cut a leg off first or All them with gasoline," my chauf feur informed me calmly.

Unluckily the Cantonese Secret Service la not always right, and boy employed by an Englishman know out there, was shot as a traitor, Nothing could convince the authorl- ties that he could not have been in the place alleged, lighting flares to guide allacking Joponese planes.

Canton was once a place of lights and colours, but when I arrived up the river (on exclling trip, for we ron aground twice and were two hours late), the whole place หา painted grey for the sake of camou- flage.

There I experienced my Arst air raid since I was a child in the Great War. That was the first air raid that they had at the beginning of Septem- ber.

Everyone believed that it was the signal for an attempted landing of troops and making Canton a scene of active fighting. Periodically since then Canton has been raided, Let- ters from friends told me that they expected every moment to be forced to leave-but it has taken five months for the real attack to begin.

On The Island

IN Canton, second oldest treaty port, one of the remaining Concessions, where no Chinese other than servants are allowed to live, exists. It is a little island called Shameen, which is about half a mile Tong and quarter of a mile wide.

On it live some 500 foreigners, chiefy merchants trading by river with the places up-country. It is a tropical island with myriads of mos. quitoes and extraordinary smells from the river.

Since September the foreigners Shameen have been living in "prisoners." It was none too safe for travelling down to Hongkong, roll and river

were continually bombed. It won dangerous to leave the island-and now the attack has begun, the next few days may be full of perți tõ them.
