Polecat Kills Baby In Pram

By ARTHUR BRENARD

Mutilated by a wild polecat which attacked her in her pram, Julia Frankel, five-months-old daughter of a B.B.C. musician, Mr. Benjamin Frankel, died from her injuries in a Tunbridge Wells hospital.

Attracted by faint cries from the per- ambulator at the bottom of the garden at their home at Wadhurst, Sussex, on Wed- nesday, Mrs. Joyce Frankel ran to find her daughter with extensive face injuries.

She rushed to 'phono a doctor, and on her return found a fully grown polecat savagely at- tacking the child.

"I switched Julia from the perambulator and ran into the house," Mrs. Frankel told me.

"But the beast leapt from the perambulator and followed me. I just had time to slam the door. "A TERRIBLE WARNING"

"It was a large black and dirty-white crea- ture, and its jaws were covered with blood.

"It was by chance that I happened to pause for a moment to liston ff Julia had awakened, as usually she sleeps for hours in the garden. It is a terrible warning to mothers in the country to take every precaution against wild beasts which still seem, in 1937, tà exist in England.

"We came here five months ago to enjoy the peace and quict of the countryside. My husband and I and our two-years-old son will leave here as soon as we can.”

POLECAT SHOT

Julia was taken to hospital, where the wounds on her face and body were stitched and bandaged, but she died from shock and loss of blood.

"Having tasted blood, the polecat, I suppose, became crazy for more and roamed round the

house all last night," Mr.

Frankel told me.

"Early this morning my gardener saw the beast, cornered and shot it. He tells me it is the first ho has seen during the 50 years he has lived in the neighbour- hood,

"Dr. E. A. C. Fazan, who attended my daughter, says he has not seen one in the district for 40 years, but there must be others, and mothers must be warned by our loss."

The Inquest will be held at Wad- hurst to-day

"Pygmalion" is to be made by Pascal Productions, with Gabriel Fascal as producer, while Leslie Howard and Anthony Asquith are joint directors.

Leslie Howard thus realises at least a part of a dream he has had for years.

He wants to have his own flim-producing company supervising the making of his own films and films with other stars,

E choice of Wendy Hiller la interesting. She is one of the very best of our younger actresses and starred in Pygmalion" because George Bernard Show was so impressed by her performance in a -Malvern production that he insisted on her getting what may well be one of the prize parts of the next film

year.

Otherwise G.B.S. seems to have decided that there are things about Alm making he does not know.

He has told W. P. Lipscombe, who wrote the scenario, to get on with the job and that he would not interfere.

"Pygmalion" has had a most thorough preparation and all seems set for Pinewood getting the prestige pleture for which it hopes. Whereas G.B.S. has formerly been filmed in awe, "Pygmalion" will be filmed with understanding.
