BATSMEN SHINE AT CRICKET
Volunteers Just Stave Off Defeat
The Volunteers forced a close draw in the Arst match of their race week series against the Kowloon Cricket Club yesterday.
At stumps the last pair was batting with the score 17 in arrears.
D. J. N. Anderson was again in form with the bat, contributing 89 to the K. C. C. total of 188 for seven. His performance, however, was over- shadowed by George Souza who com- piled an undefeated 93 out of 100. Ito batted confidently and only time robbed him of his century.
The folsh was exciting, for there were still three wickets to fall when Anderson took the last over. Bax- ter took two brilliant catches off the second and third balls but Fox play- ed put the remaining three balls safely.
Other features of the game were o solid knock by Neve, unlucky to be
run out by an excellent throw-in by

New York, Feb. 20. The Twentieth Century Sporting Club predicts a complete sell-out of tickets for the 15-round contest be- tween Joe Louls and Natham Mann. For Melbourne
The Australlon Cricket Board of Control announced on January 30 that only one Test match will be ninyed In Melbourne when the English team visits Australia in 1040.
This is a surprising decision in view of the huge attendances which were attracted to the ground for the third and fifth Tests against G. O. Allen's team last year.
The third Test had an aggregate attendance of 340,534, and the gale receipts were £29,000, n world's record.
Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane have been allotted one match and Sydney two.
CHINESE CHAMPION WINS TITLES.
Cannes, Feb. 14.
The decline of the team's playing strength is attributed largely to in- juries to Larwood, Voce and Butler, the three lending bowlers. It is hoped Vore will have fully recovered from an operation for the removal of a cartilage in his knee by the time the Australiens arrive.
The report adds: It is useless dis- guising the fact that until the county can find at least one spin-bowler who is capable of keeping a length, and change-bowlers who can do the like whilst the leading bowlers are rest- ing, we are unlikely to win many matches."
