BRAVE NEW

Gangster WORLD

ENDS AND MEANS

By Aldous Huxley (Chatto and Windus, Ee. Od.)

A

LDOUS HUXLEY is known to the world as the man who once wrote a book describing the sort of bravo now world that we must at all costs avoid.

Now he has written a book in which he describes the sort of world that all sensible people are hoping one day to build.

But the trouble about him is that he does not really understand the sort of obstacles that lie in the way of build- Ing it. He wants to build his world without once lifting a hand in anger against anyone. "Non-violenca" la his favourite phrase.

Dare We?

Now make no bones about it: thero is a vast deal of truth in Mr. Fluxley's case. He is able to point out (what some of us are still a little labio to forgat) that war, when it breaks out nowadays, is a frightful and disgusting

thing.

Isn't it

Daro wo let it break out? belter to make any sacrifice in order to maintain peace? Oughin't we, asks Mr. Hurley, to train ourselves to bear the Arat hall: of bulleta without re- sistance.so that the war-makera will soon become ashamed of themselves and slop their tricks?

Non-violenco can, of course, be used- by an attacked people if there is a wenk spot in the aggressor's armour. For instance, when Gandhi used non- violent methods, No know that the weak spot in the armour of British Imperialism was the decency of British public opinion at home.

So far, so good. But Mr. Huxley's pacifism can never be a universal remedy because there are some aggres- sors who have no weak spot of decency. The men who did not inch fram bombing Guernica will not stay their hand when they are ordered to bomb Mr. Huxley.

Here's the Danger

In fact, they will rejoice over him. Ho la precisely the sort of adversary they want. This book, Ends and Means,

urbanely charmingly and written though it 19, outlines a foreign policy and also a home polley which, it scema, te me, would play straight into the hands of the gangster politicians. If I were the Mikado of Japan, I should post a copy of it to every It I wero Mussolini or Chinese.

filler, I should post it to every English- nan, Frenchman and Ruslan,

And, what is more. I should place it In the library of every one of my

CRIME-JIGSAW

'OU have to hand it to Agatha Christie overy time. In Death on the Nile (Collins, 75. 04.), she again pops her pea gaily under the thimble, dazzles and dazes with the brilliance of her aloight of hand and impertinently produces the pen from the very place where It positively could not be.

That it is ton to one, against a murder being successfully done in such a way is in these circum- stances a small matter.

Proceed with Caution, the title of John Rhode's new Dr. Priestley story (also a Collins seven-and-sixpenny). accurately sums up a very different method. There is no great dificulty in spotting a most ingenious criminal, but you'll read happily on for the solid natisfaction of seeing how the jig-aaw falls into place.

In The High Sheriff (Constable, 75. Ud.), Henry Wade provides a study of a man with a zecret shame, quicken- ing into a story of detection with a not too satisfactory solution. Real trouble in the two halves do not hinng together. Even co, it is a book above the average.

Altogether a pretty good week.
