5,000 MEN FOR U.K. BALLOON BARRAGE

London, Feb. 6. Recruiting of 10 balloon bar- rage squadrons of 500, men each. designed to protect London against enemy air raids in the "next war," will begin in the spring. With the exception of those physically unfit for ordin- ary military duties, only men over 38 years of age will be accepted for service. Officers will be drawn from personnel above the age of 32.

Thus younger, alter men are saved for active service in the field of war. The balloon barrage men will not have any marching or personal en- counters to contend with, as would the ordinary soldier, and food and shelter should always be available.

But they must be able to withstand the rigours of weather while on duty in the open air with balloon barrage mobile units, as most of the units will be.

The balloon barrage for London' in almost completed as far as balloons and equipment are concerned, Simi- Jar protection for provincial cltics may follow in time,

The balloons are hydrogen Alled. They are attached to winchen mount- ed on trucks and con be quickly hauled up and down. They would be moved frequently, depending on An conditions of wind and weather. enemy would never know from day to day where to expect them.

They cannot be seen at night or in poor visibility, in just such condi- tions

as enemy raids might be expected. An airplane would be wrecked should it touch the steel cable by

is which the balloon tethered.

0

The balloon barrage scheme of defense has one serious shortcoming. The modern bomber can carry bomb load to 25,000 feet; the balloon barrage cannot yet be raised to this height. It is hoped that, as the plan ia developed, this handicap will be

overcome.

In the meantime, the balloon bar- rage can force enemy bombers to fly above 10,000 feet, which is well above the cover which cloud, fog or murky conditions might afford. Thus the way is cleared for fast defending fighters, which operate with great dimculty in conditions of restricted visibility.

The line of balloons with their knife-liko enbtes can also prevent low-fying-bombing attacks, the type of attack against which imti-aircraft batteries are almost helpless.

If a method is perfected whereby the balloon barrage can be raised to the "ceiling" of bombing planes, It may revolutionize kleas of air de- fence. Even in its present stage of development it is considered tuf- Delently valuable as to form one of London's principal defences against nir altnek
