THE HONGKONG

BOOKS-EDITED BY ROGER

BRAVE NEW

Gangster WORLD

ENDS AND MEANS

By Aldous Huxley (Challo and Windus, 83. 6A) -

#LDOUS HUXLEY is known to the world as tho man who once wrote a book 'describing the sort of brave now world that wo must at all costs avold,

Now he has written a book in which he describes the sort of world that all sensible people are honing one day to bulld

But the trouble about him is that ho does not really understand the sort of obstacles that lie in the way of build- ing it. He wants to build his world without once lifting a hand in anger against anyone. "Non-violence" is fils favourite phrase.

Dare We?

Ay

Now make no bones about it: thero is a'vast deal of truth in Mr. Huxley's caso. He is,abio, to-point out (what somo. pr. us are still a little liable to forget that war, when it breaks out nowadays, is a frightful and disgusting thing.

Dare we let it break out? Isn't it better to make any ancrince in order to maintain peaco? Oughtn't wo, naka Mr. Huxley, to train ourselves to bear the, asthall, oftrallets without re- sistance so that the war-makers will soal:bccóma jashamed of themselves and stop, their..tricks?

Non-violence car, of course, be used by an attacked people if there is a weak spot in the aggressor's armour. For instance, when Gandhi used non- violent methods,ho know that the weak spot in the armour of British Imperialism was the decency of Britch public opinion at home.

So far, so good. But Mr. Huxley's paclism can never be a universal remedy because there are some aggres- sora who have no weak spot of decency. The men who did not inch from bombing Guernica will not stay ther hand when they are ordered to bomb Mr. Huxley.

"Here's the Danger

In fact, they will rejoiço over him. He is precisely the sort bf advemary they want. This book Ends and

Dharmingly Means,

and urbanely written though it 15, outlines a foreign policy and also a home policy which, it deems to me, would play straight into the hands of the gangster politicians. II were the Mikado of: Japan, I should post a copy of it to every Chhindre. If I were Mussolini or fitler, I should post it to every-English- man, Frenchman and Russian.

And, what is more. I should place it. in the library of every one of my -concentration campa W. 0.0.3.

`OU have to hand it to Agatha Chriatle every time. In Death on the Nite (Collins, 78. Gd.), she again pops her pea gaily under the thimble, dazzles and dazes with the brilliance of her sleight of hand and impertinently produces the pen from the very pince where It positively could not be.
