Guerilla Troops Exact Heavy Toll From Japan

SHIP CARRIES 13,000 DEAD BACK TO JAPAN

400 Killed in Surprise Attack on Sungkiang

Shanghai, Feb. 19.

With the extension of the Japanese lines, a great part of the present hostilities on the Chinese side is in the form of guerilla warfare in which continual casualties are being inflicted on the Japanese.

Authentic details are difficult to obtain, but one example, believed to be typical, may be cited. Recently guerilla troops swooped down on Sungkiang, 22 miles south-west of Shanghai, and took a Japanese garrison by surprise. They killed about 400 Japanese soldiers, whose bodies were brought to Shanghai for cremation.

Sungklang is the burial place of the American General, Fredericle Word, organiser of the army which, after his death, became known as Gordon's "ever victorious army"-a force which

The aim of the Japanese offensive in Shanel, according to official Japan- ese sources, is to complete the clear- ance from the southern half of the province of all opposition which, it is estimated, is composed of 10 divi- sions of Shansi provincial troops and seven divisions of Central Government programme forces, in addition to several thou- sands of Communist guerilla fighters, Japanese reinforcements are pour ing into the province from Manchu

NEARLY AN INCIDENT

This accident might have been an incident of the gravest sort. A Japanese bomber dropped a load within a few feet of the U.S.S. Augusta at Shanghai some time ago, and the flagship of the American Asiatic Fleet trombled to the frightful shock. A sailor on a near-by ship had ine luck and presence of mind to take this picture, which has only just been released-some weeks after the event.
