Navy Suspects Tokyo Already Building Over Treaty Limits

1938 PROGRAMME DEPENDS UPON JAPAN'S ANSWER

London, Feb. 7.

The Daily Telegraph's naval correspondent, Mr. Hector C. Bywater, says to-day that the British Navy's estimates to be introduced at the end of the month will provide for additional battleships and cruisers, designed within Treaty limits-35,000 tons for the former and 8,000 tons for the latter.

But alternative plans exist for larger and more powerful types and these will be adopted if the Japanese reply to His Majesty's Government's query in respect of Japanese tonnage building is in any way unsatisfactory.

It is understood it is proposed to lay down from three to five battleships during the coming summer and

autumn.

If it becomes known that Japan is constructing vessels above Treaty limits, though Japan is not signatory to the London Treaty, this year's British battleships will exceed 40,000 tons and mount formidable armament of 16-inch guns.

+

In the same eventuality then new cruisers may be ships of 10,000 tons, with eight-inch guns.

Mr. Bywater adds that in British that naval quarters it is believed Japan has already on the stocks two battleships of more than 40,000 tons and that two further unlts are about to be ind down-Reuter.
